Default War Memorial-W. Mossman

This shows how the bare dates on a war memorial don't reveal the full anguish of families:
Morpeth Herald, 20 June 1919:

"News has been received, by Mrs Mossman, 4 South Street, Amble, informing her that her husband, Pte. William Mossman, Machine Gun Corps, has been missing since 21st March, 1918, and the Army Council have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he died on that day, and they expressed the deepest sympathy with Mrs Mossman and family in their bereavement."

Default 21/3/1918

1st day of the German Spring Offensive, aka 'Operation Michael'. Large numbers of Brits killed and captured on that day. The Offensive was the last throw of the dice for the Germans; it was very successful initially but they got themselves over extended and lost the momentum. Closest we came to losing the war.
