Google Earth Overlay Amble
Don't know if anyone out there on this forum uses Google Earth. There's quite a nice feature in there whereby you can overlay an image onto the current map.
This is really useful if you have an old map. You can place it on top of the existing google earth map and use features such as existing roads or buildings to 'accurately' (it's close but not exact) position the old map (see the attached jpg). If anyone has Google Earth, you can use the .kmz file in the attachment (zipped up to allow me to upload it) to view the old 1860 Amble map. I've done maps for Chevington Drift, Radcliffe, Broomhill Colliery, Ackington Airfield and some others. If anyone out there find them useful, I'll upload those too. It's great seeing where buildings or indeed entire villages used to be (especially for those of us who are too young to remember them ). It's also good to find features that haven't changed too! |

Rick, I have uploaded the Chevington Drift overlay to the 'Lost Villages' thread, trying to keep things tidy!

I'd be very interested in the Radcliffe version. I've been making an attempt to write memories of my upbringing in the village so the overlay would be a useful addition to that work.
