It's a good job I don't suffer from depression, the amount of time I'm spending on newspaper reports of inquests in the area
Here's another interesting one from the Newcastle Courant of 5 October 1855:
"On Monday, the 1st inst., an inquest was held at the house of Mr Christopher Robson, innkeeper, Amble, before Mr Hardy, coroner, on the body of Joseph Foulger Hutchinson, quarryman, aged 63 years. Deceased resided at Amble, and worked at Ulgham Quarry, and at five o'clock on the morning of that day, as he was proceeding along the Amble branch of the North Eastern Railway, was overtaken by a coal train and knocked down, and so severely injured that he died in a few minutes. The morning was dark and misty, and deceased was very deaf, and had neither seen nor heard the train coming. Verdict - Accidental Death."
Can you imagine anyone walking that distance to do a full day's manual labour these days!
