Amble Flower Show and Athletic Sports
Let the good times roll, advertisement for the Flower Show in the Morpeth Herald, 5 September 1891:
"The Amble Floral and Horticultural Society will hold theor seventh annual exhibition of flowers, fruit and vegetables, in a field in front of Amble House (kindly granted for the occasion by Mr. Lillie) on Saturday, September 12th 1891: PROGRAMME OF SPORTS. Quoit Handicap-on the Sward, 10 yards distance, 2 inch pins, 11 points game. 1st Prize-£1; 2nd-10s; 3rd-5s. Entrance 6d. each. 120 yards Handicap Footrace-1st, £1; 2nd, 10s., 3rd, 5s. Entrance 6d. Running Hop, Step and Leap-1st, 5s; 2nd, 2s 6d. Entrance 6d. Running High Leap-1st, 5s; 2nd, 2s 6d. Wrestling-Men of all Weights, 1st Prize, £1; 2nd, 10s; 3rd, 5s. Amateur Safety Bicycle Handicap-about 2 miles, 1st Prize, a Nickle Silver Plated Bicycle Lamp, value, 21s; 2nd, a Bugle, value 10s 6d; 3rd. a Horn, value 5s 6d (Presented by Devey & Co., Berwick). Entrance 1s. Football Match-Newcastle Science & Art v. Amble. REFRESHMENTS ON THE GROUNDS. Radcliffe Brass Band will be in attendance under the leadership of Mr. Gillon. A Grand Ball will be held in the evening, music supplied by the Radcliffe String Band." |

So we had a string band at Radcliffe as well. Plenty enthusiasm for music in the old mining communities.
Decent prizes in those competitions. £1 in 1891 is over £100 today. ..and the football...Amble vs Newcastle ! (ok Newcastle Science and Art ) |
