Default Amble photographs Burton and Forbes abt 1900

Had a great visit to Amble on Sunday met with Leslie .. then bumped in to Coquet as well. We were looking at the site of Burton and Richardson works.

Leslie suggested we share some of our family photos from Amble

Here is one of four of the children of John and Mary Burton taken about 1902 when they were probably in Queen Street and next to Pringle photographer.

The eldest is my grandmother Gladys with her brothers Ridley Jack and Cecil (born 1900)

Splendid photos. I couldn't appreciate these when we met the other day because I didn't have my glasses on!

I think we had at least four photographers in the town in the Victorian/Edwardian period:

Barsted, Pringle, Burrows and Waters. Perhaps there were others?

The Forbes girls were in the Steamboat Inn with John Burton in the 1901 Census. The rest of the Forbes family were in Acklington Street

Both Alexander and Catherine were from Dumfries but had arrived in Amble about 1880. They are in Sanderson's Buildings in the 1881 Census

Are there any photos of Sanderson's Buildings?

Was Sanderson's Buildings behind the north end of the top of Queen Street? - I think it was - in there we had Walker's Buildings, Sanderson's Buildings and the Radcliffe Arms pub. Part of that lot later became Prospect Terrace?

Any idea of dates for Barsted in Amble?

I have a Barsted CdV of my grandfather as a baby on a fur rug - he was born 1902. So that's a start.

Barsted should show in the trade directories. Also I was going to have a look in the newspaper archive but it's offline at the moment.

With your date above and mine, we should find him on the 1901 Census, then we can check the ones either side; 1891 and 1911, for a rough guide

Barsted is aged just 25 on the 1901 Census, but he is a photographer in Church Street, with his wife Christina and baby Amy.

He is still a Photographer on the 1911 census, (has seriously expanded his family but can't stop having daughters )

John Wake Barsted, Photographer and Picture Framer was Amble born, 1877, and his father James was a Seaman, born Norfolk. on the 1891 census our future Photographer is a "Letter Carrier" and his older brother Charles is a "Printer's Assistant"

James - the photographer's father - appears to be buried in the East Cemetery age 86 and buried 1930. It is possible he is buried in his sons grave, James Edward, age 1, buried 1880.

I would expect the rest of the Barsteds, if they remained here, are in the West cemetery?

A little aside: There seems to be a connection with Norfolk and Amble - perhaps it is just me but there appears to be a good number of Sailors from Norfolk making Amble their home?

I would like to start a new thread on the "Tucks" - Shopkeepers and Auctioneers in Amble - apparently another Norfolk bunch that appears to have made Amble their home - unless someone else has some info and can start one??

Father and son are in separate graves, Coquet. The son was buried in one of those graves that takes several infants from different families. The father was resident in Cross Street when he died.

Thanks .. we did not find him in 1901 on ancestry due to minor mistranscription .. have now seen both 1901 and 1911 images.

There is a family tree on ancestry with his death as 1965 in Amble

and details of one daughter's marriage
Nellie Barsted m John William Arnott Alwick 1928
she died in 1988

Acklington is ok for a postal address for Amble at that time as Acklington was our "post town" - it's now Morpeth.

Default Forbes descendant

I've been in touch with Anne Capellanti a grand daughter of Catherine Forbes the youngest sister of the two maids. She writes

***
I'm still flabbergasted. Thank you so much. I really don't have any information on why the family moved to America. I do know that, probably by the 1920s, many of the Forbes siblings moved away from West Virginia to avoid working in the coal mines. They scattered, with some moving to Michigan, some to Texas.

I do remember my father talking about his Aunt Mary a lot. My sister remembers visiting my grandmother while Mary was in a hospital bed in the front room of the house. That would have been the early 1960s.

I know my grandmother visited Amble many times, beginning in the 1950s and remained in contact with some relatives. I fondly remember getting packages of chocolate oranges and shortbread cookies in the mail from cousins overseas.

All weekend I found myself daydreaming of visiting Amble someday.***

Her grandmother Catherine Forbes was born at Cliff House in 1896 and died in West Virginia in 1975. Catherine's married names were Reichenbach ( died 1940) and Krause.

Anne has told me that the two maids in the photograph never married but there are many USA descendants of the other siblings

Default Krause House, Amble

""Catherine Krause - nee Forbes born Amble 1896- visited her relatives in Amble many times in the 1950's" said her granddaughter

I've now seen the passenger lists which show her travelling back and forth almost every year between 1952 and 1959 and on several she states the UK address as 'Krause House, Amble'

Any ideas about the location of Krause House?

and who were the relatives she visited so many times? Likely to be Forbes

Robin

ps I'm now in touch with a grandson of Margaret Ellen Forbes born Amble 1891 .. unfortunately he has no family tales of Amble
