The photo in the link is of my Great Uncle's sweet shop in Queen Street, it later became George's and then Chapman's, where I bought my first ever record.

The Chocolate Soldier
And that other paper shop in Queen Street , right on the corner with Cross Street, I can't remember the name of that one, it's on the tip of my tongue ...

Edit ... and how could I forget Mrs Parks in Leazes Street.

They all had those trays of penny sweets, pink shrimps, flying saucers and chocolate tools etc. Yummy!

there was another one along from Whittle's Corner, the single story white cottage. Can't remember its name. Domestic house now, one time Ray's Taxi office as well.

Yes , I think it was half off-licence half other stuff but I can deffo remember the ice-cream. Tutti-frutti, mint choc chip etc in tubs on the right as you went in. They sold fireworks as well, during October/November.

On the corner of Henderson Street and Leezes Street was Billy Lillies shop, a one room affair similar to Parks shop.
On the corner of Queen Street and Turner Street, where Lawrence is now, was Redmans. This one and Rosses caught all the people off the bus coming to the pictures, the others swept up the people from the bottom end on their way up.
Stokoe also sold ice cream from the big house on the end of Gordon Street/ Marine Road, the one with the front garden.

Whittles was originally "Lottie Hollands" and the cafe next to it was a cross between a cafe and ice cream shop in the early '60's before the taxi firm.

Mckinnes's shop was on the corner of Cross st - the nameboard reappeared briefly when the plastic of Littles was remved and the front renovated a couple of years ago!

Anyone remember Cains cafe at top of Queen st - any photos ? I have to declare an interest!

You are right, the one on the corner of Cross Street was McKinnes originally and continued trading as that under a Mr Pringle for many years, the other paper shop and the only off licence in Amble, as far as I can remember, was Purves and Hedley opposite Barclays bank now a web site shop. This was taken on by several people after the retirement of Bob Purves and finally merged with the one at the corner of Cross Street fairly recently.

I can't remember the cafe you mention, the blue kettle is the one that comes to mind, I was always fascinated by their orange squash machine: they made great Horlicks too. Some say it was the centre of the universe. There was another cafe down the bottom called the harbour cafe, I think, opposite the coop undertakers but I never saw anyone in it.

I remember getting off the bus from school and straight into the sweet shop at the corner of Albert St/High St (was Millenium windows last time I noticed). Was this not owned by the Whittles?

Could be wrong, but i think Bill Young had the Off licence before he opened the Sports Shop at bottom of Queen St.

I remember this as Whittles, blue painted?

Can anyone remember this shop being " Jimmy Halls". It was a grocery and Jimmy used to make "penny lollies" out out orange juice, pop a stick into them, freeze them and sell them to the kids. He would also take the free money off coupons your mother would get from time to time in lieu for these lollies or sweets etc.

That shop, ex Millennium Windows, soon to be a Podiatry Clinic, is number 14 Albert Street.
