Default Slaughter House

Here's a nice one from a meeting of Amble District Council in 1895:
"The chairman called the attention of the Board to the nuisance at present existing at the Links and near the Cemetery, of great bones lying about, which dogs evidently got from the slaughter house and tripery closely adjoining."

Bizarre.

The old rubbish tip is right up against the east wall, and down the banks to the sea. Rubbish tips and cemeteries together. Not the best combination? Those Victorian planners don't get a gold star for that one.

The 1897 OS map has some buildings behind the cemetery which seem to have been associated with the salt works (disused), otherwise there isn't anything marked on the map and this is only a couple of years after the article.

not sure of the date of the picture above but would guess 1905-1910

not much of the tip is filled but you can see junk rolling down the sand from the left.

perhaps the slaughter house was in the disused salt pans?

Perhaps those old salt works buildings could have been used. There seems to be a metal enclosure next to the chimney.
The council obviously hoped for some high tides to manage their rubbish programme!
I can remember the rubbish tip on the Braid and those little council wagons dumping it all. Mind you, it's not like modern rubbish, a lot went on to the fire at home
