Default seine netters

I lived at Radcliffe but spent quite a lot of time at Amble Harbour. The sight of the fishing boats, which were I believe mainly seine netters, entering the harbour and unloading their catch was, and still is, quite exhilarating. I assume that, in the past, the catch included herring as there was a kipper processing business in the harbour. Can anyone tell me if this is right? And can anyone tell me exactly how a seine net worked?
