I've been doing a bit of searching of old newspapers as part of a project and I came across this delightful piece from the Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury of 6 January 1849;
"The Amble Social Ball was held in the long room of the Queen's Head Inn at that place on Monday evening last, the attendance at which was large and respectable, the elite of the fair sex residing in the neighbourhood having homoured it with their prescence. The dancing was sustained with much spirit until an early hour in the morning. Much credit is due to Mr Robson and the managers for the tasteful manner in which the room was decorated, and for the excellent arrangements they had made to promote the enjoyment of the evening."

Yep, just the same as the Bede Street Club on a Saturday night. Nothing's changed. - Except perhaps the young ladies' behaviour on exiting the premises?? -
