Default The Stanners

Just found the Smailes children living in Youngers Terrace in 1901 census and was wondering if this was miners housing, as the head is classed as a coal miner hewer, was there a mine nearby?

Hi Gordon, quite a few miners lived in Warkworth but not in pit houses. It would all be private rented. The most likely pit would be Shilbottle. I know my granddad, who lived in Dial Place, worked at Shilbottle....he walked there and back, couldn't ride a bike

...suppose they would use the weir as a short cut and get a free bath on the way home!
