Default Druridge Bay Motorbike races

Does anyone else remember the motorbike racing on the sands at Druridge Bay? There were two long straights with two tight bends, one at each end. I suppose it had to be held on a particular day so that the tides were right. Even so I seem to remember that during the last few races some of the bikes ended up in the sea. There must have been some sort of club behind the organisation but I have no idea who.

My late dad used to race at Druridge , I think it was in the 50's .He had a few bikes at the time ................ a Vincent and a BSA Goldstar ..............not sure which bike he raced but I have a few old photos taken at the time. I'm sure it was a club event but have no idea who organised it .

The racing events were organised by the 'Newcastle and District Motor Club' from the 1920s to late 1950s

In 1926 they were not just racing bikes but cars too. Proceeds of the programme sales in that year were given to the 'Chevington Childrens' Distress Fund' (The miners strike was in it's seventh month)

looks like it must have continued into the 60s; have a look at this page bottom quarter:

Default Druridge Bay Motor cycle racing

I lived at Hadston and in the 50s I used to attend the racing, (which was a short walk) with my pals, I remember the 2 most prolific racers were called Rex Young and another called Armstrong, one of them raced in white overalls. The racing also included sidecars. One of the above I believe came from somewhere around the Morpeth area. I remember the race day was mainly at the weekend, and when the tide stayed out for most of the day.
