Ferney Bed Colliery
An interesting report from the Newcastle Journal of 10 September 1910:
"An interesting coal trade development has taken place at Amble, from which port, we understand, the first shipment of house coals from the new Ferney Bed Colliery of the Widdrington Coal Co. has just been made. A cargo of steam small coals has also been shipped during the last few days. As the first sod of this colliery was only cut in June last year, it will be seen that unusually good progress has been made. The coal has been found to be of excellent quality, and the shipments from the pit will very materially add to the business done at the port of Amble." |

Ferneybeds the sea sale colliery
Ferneybeds Colliery was quite a short-lived affair; 15 years I believe. Quite shallow workings too - 21 metres to the yard seam. A shaft and a drift under the 'mile road'. I think most of the men went to Stobswood Colliery when it closed. Still surprised they shipped coal out of Amble.

Would Ellington and Stobswood have tapped into the Ferneybeds seams?
Isn't the opencast trying to work up towards the Mile Road, I seem to recall someone mentioning that. |

Found the Journal article amusing. I wonder who knows about the coastal villages forum? Seems to have been a failed NCC initiative to appease those voters who objected to the creation of the unitary authority, but has carried on despite losing its funding.
I must speak to my sister, she's allegedly covered, living in Hadston. I think I'll just get one of those blank stares. |
