Default National Archives-1st World War Unit Diaries

In case you haven't picked it up the National Archives are digitising unit diaries as part of their World War 1 release of information. Fortunately the Northumberland Fusiliers are amongst the first phase released:

9 Infantry Brigade 1 Battalion NF 1.8.1914-30.6.1915 (WO 95/1430/1); 1.7.1915-30.6.1916 (WO 95/1430/2);1.7.1916-31.12.1917(WO 95/1430/3); 1.1.1918-31.5.1919 (WO 95/1430/4);

1 Northern Brigade 51 Battalion NF (army of occupation) 1.3.1919-31.10.1919 (WO 95/1438/2);

1 Northern Brigade 52 Battalion NF 1.3.1919-31.10.1919 (WO 95/1438/3);

1 Northern Brigade 53 Battalion NF 1.3.1919-30.9.1919 (WO 95/1438/4).

A and B Squadrons of the Northumberland Hussars are also released.

Forgot to say, they're charging but £3.36 a piece.

Yes it's good news, mentioned it back here. Some of the WW1 Diaries have been online for years - 1/5th NF and 1/4th NF, who fought alongside our own guys in the 1/7th. But sods law being what it is they never did the digitisation of the 1/7th but it will be online very shortly as you say.

Of great importance are the embedded field returns, but they haven't digitised those as far as I am aware in their earlier attempts. If they do, the number of pages would expand by an order of magnitude, so I suspect they wont be doing it.

On the subject of the National Archives, I'll (almost certainly now) get the chance end of next month to pop in there for a 5 hour session, so is there anything essential (or just interesting) we need?

NA Search is here:

I'll be collecting more 'Amble Battery' docs, plus some WW1 officers' papers (not local, medal dealing stuff) and the report for the Stirling Bomber crash which is incomplete in the Acklington Record book, but another copy should be in the relevant bomber squadron book. I also want to have a peek at the 1/7 NF's brigade records (149th).

should be time for other (non-military ) things but what?

I wonder what their rules are on photographing Tithe maps? We are now desperately overdue for a comprehensive 'map room' on here or the sister site.

I would have thought that anything that is non military has been passed to Woodhorn, including tithe maps, so probably World War 1 stuff is the thing to go for at Kew. Of course what isn't there is probably held by the Northumberland Estates archive.

I'm off to Woodhorn tomorrow to have a spoach in the Charles Percy, solicitors records....seems there is something about Amble Gas Works and Kiln Bank House. Most likely the original documents for what is held at the Gas Archive.

I'm sure there is a vast amount of material at the National Archives that is not at Woodhorn.

for instance; Ambell Manor, Surveyor General 1792.

http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...s?uri=C3680632

no idea if it contains useful material for us!

Amble Roman Catholic School 1880-1915

content ???

Tithe maps - sure they have a full set. Plus boundary strip maps, and related material

1844 Tithe map of East Chivington (township in the parish of Warkworth), Northumberland. Shows buildings (named), woods (coloured), rock outcrops, foreshore, named streams. Scale: 1 inch to 8 chains

It just goes on and on.

http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...s?uri=C2689794

or Amble Shipbuilding Company, board of trade dissolved company file. 1918-1948

what would that contain? just legal docs?

Brudenell, James: The manor or lordship of Amvell [Amble]; 32 old bolls and 4 bushels or 98 new bolls of big paid every Candlemas day by the tenants of Amble; the free warren or coney garths belonging to Amble and Hauxley; the smith's shop in Amble; the coal mines in Amble and Hauxley; the site of salt pits or salt pans in Amble with all other privileges and royalties belonging to the said lordship; four farms in Amble called the Hopehouse; two farms in Hauxley called Hauxley Fields; a tenement or free burgess house and garth in the town, fields and territories of Warkworth; and three farms with the coney warren in Todston alias Togsdon [Togstone]; Moor-houses commonly called the Low Hall in the parish of Warkworth.

"Exchequer: Pipe Office: Particulars, Warrants and Transcripts for Crown Leases"

that looks interesting but it probably isn't when you get it out! More taxation docs.
1744 and it mentions the salt pans and mines at Amble and a Smith's Shop????

I don't know if that document is in the rolled form of the pipe rolls, if it was I wouldn't want to handle it!

That might be worth looking at, must have a list of assets and a plan of the yard surely?

Perhaps Woodhorn have an index of relevant material held at the national archives? or perhaps that would confuse matters with people heading to the wrong archive to look for things?

My head always goes into a spin with military structure but I believe the NF 1/7 is part of 149 Brigade, so not yet released by the National Archives. As they are unit diaries it is unlikely that individuals names will appear, unless very highly ranked.

WW1 service records for the NF were mostly destroyed by fire so that source for info on individuals has gone.

Not very promising borderlad and frustrating for a lot of people too

It's probably best to focus on one area, do you think?.....maps would be promising and that 1844 Chevington one sounds good. Need to know what NA's policy is though. Yesterday I went rash at Woodhorn and ordered a hand drawn 1920 plan of Amble House to go on the site......they charge a £10 royalty on top of copying costs

Oooh nasty! I knew it would end up like that. It is unusable for us now then without a grant from somewhere!

It was £4 at the NA to use an image (your own photo) of a document on-line.

It looks like we'd better take a begging bowl to the heritage Lottery or whatever it's called.

I think they spent a third of a million on the Bondicar dig. Not much to show locally for it. I wonder what we could have done with 1% that? Fabulous map room. [sour grapes!]

ooh Amble House - I would be interested in contributing to that Janwhin, will it include the whole property do you know? or just the building as we have part of the land and stables out the back.

It is the whole property hollydog. In 1920 Amble House was put up for sale by Dr Smyth after he had already submitted plans for a lot of house building round the edges of the land. I sketched that one out Since the house went up for sale in October 1920 I think the building had already happened?

The building plan put 3 properties at the north eastern corner, 10 along Wellwood Street plus two facing into Bede Street and then 11 up Bede Street.

I did write out the detail of the sale document so I'll stick that on here soon.

The sale documents also included a very nice photograph of Amble House....I'm going to Woodhorn tomorrow so I can get a copy of that if you want.
