Default Map symbols

Does anyone know what the Maltese cross and letters stand for on old maps? this one I believe from 1620s shows some examples of field/ enclosures near Amble (ok, Ambell ) marked with letters followed by one or two maltese crosses. The letters appear to have three options: "A" "M" or "P"

just been googling this one for half an hour with no result.
