East Cemetery Headstone
Coquet, am I right in believing that you have photographed all of the headstones that are still standing?
There is a query on Rootsweb about a headstone seen in 1971 but not there now as far as I can see. I've pointed them in the direction of this website |

yes think I got most of them, some photos are not added yet - what is the name?
There was a story that some of the headstones were removed completely - parts appearing incorporated into the concrete shelf/seat at the paddling pools! |

The name is Melrose although I think there are a couple of Watsons listed. It should have been quite a significant headstone, the last name was from 1928. The Melroses were landlords of the Widdrington Arms at Felton and butchers in Amble.

I don't appear to have a picture of it. If you give me the plot number I'll have a look this week. It could have been missed.

The storey about the headstones being used as seats at the paddling pools is true. I never understood to this day why it happened or who the fool was that authorised it .

Thanks Coquet, it should be R74. There are 7 Melroses mentioned on it as well as Hannah Watson and Margaret Isabella Alder.

Thanks Ambler, I can't believe that could have been allowed to happen. There is talk of paddling pool refurbishment happening? perhaps one of us should raise this with the Council and see if they could be found during the works and put back where they belong

Good point
It should be brought up, maybe they have gone now, I haven't been down there for a while and I would imagine the council would love to hide that ! |

I need to restyle that East Cemetery page to look like the Chevington Churchyard one and get the primary inscriptions in alphabetical order, adding the difficult photos which are currently left out. ...some day... |

The stone directly behind includes John Thomas Melrose - the other butcher (son) as per the old advert on the other thread I assume?
(I know -photos need to be taken in the morning with the sun in the east!) |

I had a look for my ancestor in H5.
you could probably find any grave accurately with two surveyors tapes and some care. |

That quarter must be left as a wildlife habitat? Difficult to walk over!

Ref east cemetery.
As the cemetery has been a subject of recent discussion, I thought this 60's pic
showing the church spire under repair may be of interest. George Gray.2009-10-08 7 &24 030.jpg |
