Default Local Railways

Thought I would try to start a railway related thread with something that may be of interest.
I was given this photo back in 1978? I can remember it happening one dark winter night, the evening return service to Newcastle 6.30ish left Alnmouth and was immediately signalled into the loop, the driver didn't realise and thought he was on the up main line. The catch points in the loop at Wooden Gate did their job!

Default Coals to Oxwell Mains

Found this on youtube, featuring Shilbottle exchange sidings and a run north through Alnmouth to the cement works near Dunbar. Classic, dreary run down feel of the railways typical of 1976!

I used to travel down the Whittle line with and Electrician called Norman Marshall to do the planned maintenance on the track switches. On the diesel locos though - steam was before my time. Ken Middlemist was head honcho No1 driver on the locos I recall.

It was talking to Ken this am that prompted me to put the films on the forum!
He is on page 3 of todays Journal, reunited with one of the Whittle diesels he used to drive. There is a link, if you havn't seen it, on the Aln Valley Railway's facebook page.

Default Amble Station World War 2

I was sent this photo somewhile ago. I find it fascinating these local school children were rehearsing the role of forthcoming evacuees. There were four train loads expected from Tyneside but I understand only half turned up. Can anyone recognise family members? This is belieed to be July 1939.evacuees 28.7.1939.jpg

Look to be about 10 or 11 year olds? survivors would now be in their 80s; born circa 1929?

Have you got an approx date for the existence of the company? They should be in the trade directories for the area, I have a 1934 edition at hand and they are not in that one.

I used to travel to my grans in Amble from Shilbottle every Friday on the 9pm Ords bus ,I would always hope the gates at the Warkworth crossing would be closed,the driver (Maurice?) would not be pleased if they were!!I loved the wait and hearing the train approach and go roaring through,steam then in the fifties!!Also remember the station in Amble where each year Roberts circus would arrive and the elephants were led of to parade to the circus ground.

Default Derailment near Amble Junction 15 July 1967

Saturday 15th July 1967 the up North Briton was derailed by a broken rail.
Picture shows the broken rail (1941 single hole rail) A 202 squadron helicopter was used to ferry the nine injured persons to ambulances at nearby RAF Acklington.
I have the official accident report and this is the photo page included with it.

I used to audit it in the 1960s for Peat Marwick Mitchell and Co when it was a subsidiary of Petrofina -before that it was owned by an ironmonger in Wooller.
