Default Amble fire station

During WW2 I think my mother and aunt worked for the Northumberland fire service ,probably manning the phone etc but not going out to fires. My question is would any evidence remain in the form of old log books etc?I have tried the fire service but they say no records remain. So would any of our historians be able to help?

Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service as we would recognize it wasn't formed until 1947. Prior to that, Amble UDC would have had it's own Fire Brigade.

I suspect that your Mother and Aunt may have been members of the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) which was formed at the outbreak of WW2 to support local Brigades, and in fact ran in parallel with local Fire Brigades until it's disbandment in 1968. Members of the AFS were unpaid volunteers.

The only place that I can think of that may have retained some local records is the Woodhorn archive.

Also worth looking at the 1939 register. Fire service generally gets a note added to the person's record. (As with ARP etc)
