The Sinking of The Royal Oak
Local man Acting Petty Officer J.B. FISHER was lost in the sinking of The ROYAL OAK by German U-Boat at Scapa Flow.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Royal_Oak_(08) Anchored in the relatively safe harbour of Scapa Flow a German U-Boat torpedoed the Royal Oak in the early hours of 14 October 1939. Last edited by Hadston-Green; 03-11-2021 at 12:14 PM. |

Fisher (born 19th Sept 1908) was a miner from Radcliffe, joined the navy 22 February 1928. His first ship was HMS Vimy, but he must of had an accident as he was 'sick on shore' 6th Jan 1929 with a fractured skull. After recovering from that he appears to have been sent to HMS Warspite. (After that his records are not public yet but from your newspaper was on HMS Courageous before the Royal Oak.)
HMS Courageous was sunk a month before the Royal Oak, poor chap probably thought he had cheated death with his transfer to Royal Oak. |

James appears to have joined the navy the same day as his older brother Ambrose. Ambrose's first ship was HMS Caradoc. Looks like Ambrose was awarded a Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1943, his ship is recorded for the medal issue- the destroyer HMS Vanessa. (Ambrose was also a miner)

Looks like Ambrose emigrated to New Zealand in 1946, with I assume his wife and son; Betsy* and James Rowley Fisher. Their address on the departure list is 40 King Edward Street.
* née Beatrice Rebecca Rowley |

Ambrose and Betsy
there's a story here as they married in New Zealand in 1937, Betsy being a Kiwi. (not her first marriage). Did she meet a dashing British sailor ashore from his ship in Auckland?
