"A Time to Remember" 2005

The Amble Social History Group did produce a book on the recollections of locals in WW2. It also includes some research on a percentage of those on the War Memorial.

Here's a couple of WW2 Anti-Aircraft Gunnery certificates for an Amble AB who spent many years on the Broomhill Colliery Steamers (my grandfather)

During the war I think the Board of Trade took more control of how men were deployed and you could end up working on any line, not staying with your original employer.

I'm not sure what the Broomhill Colliers had as armaments during the war, perhaps just a lewis gun on the bridge? who knows.

We can see he qualified for the .303 Lewis Gun, Oerlikon .30 Marlin, .303 hotchkiss, and the dreaded (for the operator) PAC or Parachute and Cable.

Some of the IWM photos of these guns:

Can't find a photo of the PAC, but it was a rocket attached to a steel wire that you fired into the path of an attacking aircraft.

Excuse my ignorance but what does DEMS stand for?......and stop sniggering
There are the remains of a large HAA gun battery at Gloucester Farm Blyth apparently, but don't know if they'd have let merchant seamen loose near that.

Default Dems & dams

Yes that's them. DAMS during the Great War. 'Defensively Armed Merchant Ships'.
WW2 'DEMS' were manned by RN, Army (Maritime Regiments of the Royal Artillery) and the Merchant Navy Gunners.

Do you know anything about the nature of his death? I see he is buried in India.

bit of a mystery - I was told he fell down the hold of the ship. There are other pictures of him in my album with a girl named Rosa of Bermuda, and pics of Rosa's family. I wonder if it was a romance that ended when he lost his life, and if there could be another branch of the Browns in Bermuda - which would be nice!
