Default Francis Frith Collection

Ancestry has just added the Francis Frith Collection. There are plenty for Northumberland, including 10 for Amble and 63 for Warkworth. Red Row, Shilbottle and Alnmouth are also there.

One shot of Warkworth beach even has Hauxley pit heap in the background.

I hope that does it. The title of the collection is UK, City, Town and Village Photos, 1857-2005

Yes, I explored them yesterday. Some lovely photos of the beaches and the caravan park which I remember well, having lived so close in Links Avenue.

That works.

I recall the Wynd Cottages one, might have it somewhere. Who can remember the two shops visible in the old Queen's Head pub building? What were they in 1965? I think one in earlier times was a butchers.

Frith also had one in that series near Handysides Shop in Percy Street looking towards the co-op, it doesn't appear to be online but I have one.

The shop you mention was, far back, a butchers, but in my lifetime, last 70 years, it was a doctors surgery. Dr's Reynolds and Emmerson had it, Dr Robertson was in Oswald street and Dr Thompson was in hollydogs house.
The shop on the corner in Newburgh street was the Handyshop, prop. was Jimmy Turnbull who had it for years then it was taken over by his assistant, Edith Taylor who had it until it was converted into housing.

Ah that's right. We referred to it as Turnbull's. I should have had a look at the card first as well, as it was the 'Handy Shop' not Handyside. Memory playing tricks again.

Do you know anything on the detached building centre left on that card Alan? looks like it could have been commercial.

I think it was called "Harbour House" and it stood at the end of Ocean Road. This road just has one property on it now but originally it ran straight down , through the allotments that were there, to the Amble Engineering Company. It was a bit pretentious to have called it a "road" as it was more of a dirt track for most of it's length.

They eventually moved along Leazes St and had the little sweet shop in their front room(1950s)! now a holiday let still in Family! Vague memories of the Harbour Master or Pilot living in the Harbour House , it was flats or several dwellings. was demolished in fifties I think!I was still at School when sandra mum had shop in Leases street!

You've got a great detailed memory Leslie. All I can remember are those naughty seaside postcards in the window of the Handy shop and that little shop just down from it, sold sweets and cigarettes and newspapers I think..

After the store butchers it was Jimmy Elliott for a while , he then moved to the shop on the corner of Leazes Street which is now the nail bar etc. After Jimmy it was a ladies hairdresser for many years.

I have only vague recollections of the demolition of that area.
Think everything I've marked in green went:

Probably 21 houses in that centre block knocked down and replaced with 12 in the same footprint.
