amble buffs
hi leslie,
thanks for your input. must have been a great feeling starting a new lodge going. I was a member here in Shropshire but as time goes on, other things must come first. as old buffs past away, they are hard to replace and so to does the lodge. then you must call it a day. still not heard anything from the buffs. as the say, " the queen, the order and this lodge in #######" William, |

Picked this up the other day. I don't know if it is Freemasonry or RAOB. Wonder what 'Comp' means? - and 'Amble Encampment' ??
B.F. Tuck is on our AVL 1918 and 1926 roll (Leases Street) died 1977 I believe. I don't think he is of the Norfolk Tucks discussed elsewhere on here. |

Benjamin Francis Tuck born in Choppington 1891 but his father was from Norfolk (Henry).
1911 Benjamin is living in Church Street, Amble with his widowed mother. Works in the pit. |

I saw the Choppington birth and made an assumption. Will dig a bit deeper.

Benny Tuck lived in Church Street in the 50's/ 60's with his wife and disabled daughter, he had been a keen cyclist in his day and still did a bit even in his old age.

Thanks for the information. He served in the Yorkshire Regiment and the Royal Fusiliers during the Great War but nothing survives of his soldier's papers that I can see, just his medal roll.
He was medically downgraded during the war at some point because the Royal Fusiliers battalion he was later in (43rd) was a Garrison battalion, manned by those downgraded. |

Bizarrely his other medals turned up on ebay yesterday with a dealer in Hexham.
Never thought I find them in a million years. Not a coincidence I assume. Medals now reunited and back in Amble. Tuck must have joined the local territorial battalion after the war, qualifying for the Efficiency Medal after 12 years. (right hand medal) |

He's a Sergeant on the Efficiency Medal. Perfect material for the Amble Home Guard in WW2, but that's just speculation unless someone else knows anything?

I have a coloured scroll in my possession certifying that my grandfather, John Henry Taylor, was initiated into the Sir Robert Duncan Lodge No.1266 on 11 January 1919.
Other names on the document: R.Douglas (WP), W. Green (GM) and Secretary, G. Hyde. At the time, my grandfather (known as Jack) lived in Acklington Street. |
