Rowing Races at The Amble Feast
Hi
I'm trying to find out a little more about the rowing races that used to be part of "The Amble Feast" or "Harbour Day" as pictured in this post from The Fusilier. http://www.fusilier.co.uk/amble_phot.../boat_race.htm The reason for my interest is that we have just set up Amble Coastal Rowing Club to provide an opportunity for local people to build and row skiffs from Amble as part of a very successful coastal rowing revival started in Anstruther in 2009. I understand that further up the coast, rowing regattas took place in the coastal mining villages until the early 1950s. The miners built their boats themselves from timbers “liberated” from the collieries, then each village raced against the others on their Gala days. The boats in the photos from the Fusilier look more like ships lifeboats though Does anyone have any stories to tell or aware of any records this type of activity in Amble? I'm sure these are the crews of the Broomhill Colliers competing against each other, in as you say, the Ships' lifeboats.
