Robert Carse Gair Sportsman's Battalion Royal Fusiliers
Bit reluctant to post anything in case it has been shown and discussed ad infinitum on 'that' social media site.
Anyway, here is one of our Great War Amble soldiers, Robert Carse Gair. The cap badges look similar to the Northumberland Fusiliers, but it is in fact the badge of the Royal Fusiliers. (Although Robert is missing his) He is on the absent voters list as 24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. This was one of two Sportsman's 'pals' battalions, made up from cricketers, footballers etc. His address is 51 Church Street. In the top photo, he is middle row, 2nd from the left In the bottom photo, he is front row 2nd from the left [Images courtesy of Robert Gair's granddaughter, in Australia] |

Interestingly (for me) Robert C. Gair, bank clerk, occupied my house (Bede Street) on the 1911 census, so appropriately this thread comes from Robert Gair's old house.
After the war he became Barclays Bank manager at Seahouses. |

Nice photos. Rober Carse Gair was related to my grandfather, some sort of cousin. His father was a coal trimmer who married Margaret Carse of the building family.
Interesting about the Australia connection as Robert and his wife visited Australia after his retirement in 1953. He died in 1962. |

Ned Gair, coal trimmer, lived there also, he must have been Robert C's brother. Ned was in the RND I believe, his sons Jimmy Gair Central Ave and Ronnie Gair Acklington Road are still in Amble along with their sister Mabel Durham. I take your point about "that other site" there is quite a lot of poaching going from here.

Yes that's them, Edward the Royal Naval Division man. Two sisters on the 1911 census as well, Isabella and Ethel.

The medal roll shows the battalions he served in with dates. Not very often they put the dates on the roll. Very handy if you want to cross reference to the war diaries and see what battles he was in.
Robert Carse Gair 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers 4/1/1917 – 30/1/1917 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers 31/1/1917-10/6/1917 24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers 2/10/1917 – 11/11/1918 Not sure why there's a gap? bit mysterious. Wounded? |
