Probably a basic explanation is required for the coloured map.

This shows our two ancient ecclesiastical parishes, Shillbottle and Warkworth. Both had a Norman Church - Warkworth survives, The Shilbottle one was pulled down at the end of the 19c and a replacement built. A few of the original components of the Norman church are incorporated into the Victorian rebuild.

We should note that this map is relevant to the period prior to the mining expansion that started in the 1830s. It was not long after this that more Ecclesiastical Parishes began to appear as we underwent rapid population growth.

Shilbottle Ecclesiastical Parish is coloured orange on the map. The yellow section is an "Extra Parochial" area having a chapel or church building of its own but remaining under the control of the main parish, in this case the single township of Brainshaugh, under Shilbottle.

Warkworth Ecclesiastical Parish is pink, the green area again being an Extra Parochial area to Warkworth, but having more townships this time: West Chevington, East Chevington, Bullock's Hall and Hadston.

The new ecclesiastical parishes that appeared in the second half of the 19c are Amble, Acklington and Chevington. These are not shown.
