There would have to have been some sort subsidence as well to create a pathway to the surface. I'll have a look at Alan's maps and see what workings are under there and at what depth.
Funny when it started there was lots of gas bubbling too. Now mainly just water. You might speculate some gas filled cavity has flooded venting gas then water to the surface.
