Default Living in Alnmouth in 1870

The Alnwick Mercury of 2 April 1870 has a report from the Board of Guardians who made a home visit to a Stephen Boyd after reports of overcrowding:

"He has nine of a family and himself and his wife, living in one room. Five of the children are under 10 years of age. The room contains 2663 cu.ft. It has 2 large windows. Comparing the room with the Common Lodging House Regulations it comes nearly to the cubic feet allowed to the same number of inmates."

On the 1871 census, Stephen, a shoemaker, is still there with his nine children and his wife.
