Pretty sure its an old hydrant. The valve would be around there somewhere but may have been buried over the years. It would have been used for filling steam wagons and the like.

I think any tool marks etc will have been erroded by now Coquet. However we have noted railway tracks extending down onto the beach in a previous thread. Could this be connected?
