I had a look around this morning, owing to a broken down fence and the absence of signs, I walked outside the baffle banks and came across the stone described by the moor. The two northern stones look to be under the baffle banks.The north-easterly one should have been at the end of the field boundary in the middle distance of my landscape photo. The field boundary looks to be original and the footpath follows the course of the Hauxley railway.
Next, can someone have a good look round at the back of the Moorhouse farm again?

Well that is fascinating. I really thought anything around there would be gone, with the exception of the Moorhouse farm stone. I assume 'AT' & 'HT' are simply 'Amble Township' and 'Hauxley Township'.

That's the one. Only thing is was there a second pole? I cannot remember ever seeing a second one inland from this?

I believe the church spire may have been used as the second marker? I remember a fisherman mentioning it many years ago, but I may be mistaken!

Hollydog may have it, I heard the spire was left there as a navigation aid when the chapels were demolished because of their state of disrepair. Whether these aids are needed now with satellite nav. is questionable.

I can remember hearing that they were refused permission to take down the spire because of its navigational importance. I had thought it was part of the measured mile system for testing ships out of the Tyne, but I guess it might have had more than one use.

THe marker at Saltpans in Photo , is northern most limit boundry marker for the Salmon fishing , there are metal ones on warkworth marking end of Boulmer fishing beat but not sure where , What we called Totem pole at sand pit at third shore was a viewing point for coast guards , spoke to an ld fisherman today family fished for generations and have held salmon licences for generations , hs said salt pans there were two and if lined up marked end of zone til after north pier

What do people know about the greystone at helsay as if looked at it many of times when on the land but not sure of its meaning or history.

It is a boundary marker? I wasn't aware it still existed, did you say you have seen it?

Can you describe it (don't say its big and grey!) any chance of a photo next time you are over there as it is marked on old OS maps. Can it be reached from the shore past the caravan site without doing any major trespass?

It's probably from memory about 3ft a cross and 2ft out the ground, it looks like it would be some weight. At a guess from memory sandstone. I know that the deeds say it's never to be moved .
Will try and get a pic. You can get to it at low tide without trespass.

I wonder if it is a glacial erratic (large boulder from elsewhere carried in on the glaciers then dropped as they retreated)

They often have scratches and gouges on them as they have been dragged along by the ice, and they are more often than not of a non-native stone.

I've never seen it either by I've been full of intentions to go and have a look for years!
