reading through some of the old threads, the betting shop! next to jacks. i remember when that was a dentists Mcphail was name i believe. and does anyone remember the butchers shop in front of the infants school

Pineman, have a look at this. This is a 1934 list of Chevington businesses:

in there is Joseph L Mackewley, butcher, Red Row. Could that be your man?
He is followed in the list by the dentist.

population back then 4,084. Anyone have a figure for the last census?

Also does anyone know anything about the "Comrades of the Great War Club.." at Red Row?... oooh my! Their paper records would be nice to see. Destroyed long ago I guess.

That Dr. Moyes was another local doctor drawn into the Great War, sent to Mesopotamia Nov 1917, served with an Indian Division then with a British Artillery Brigade, according to our AVLs.

The original building, made of wood, stood on the east side of the Broomhill/Red Row road (1068) It stood where now there is a rather modern red tiled bungalow. The Clubs location became the car park for it's successor, now developed into housing. As to who or where any records would survive, I cannot even guess. As you say 'Coquet', they would be nice to see. I would guess that the old club, the wooden one, would close circa 1953, when the new building was opened, next door.

Interesting. 'The Comrades of the Great War' was a national organisation that was absorbed by the British Legion in 1921. This club must be something different as the list above is dated 1934?

yes you could be right ,this was such a long time ago ,and i like the list you put out, more memories there, i started work for herbie smailes in1938, so that will give you an idea of my age. my memory needs jogging now and then , the list did it thanks a lot Coquet.

Totally unconnected I'm afraid but the name SMAILES jumped out at me.My father Ned Swan ( a mining electrician at Newburgh where we lived up to 1938) used to share a small fishing boat with a man by the name o f SMAILES ,Christian or nick name Gordy (I think !)
