Victorian Photographers Northumberland

I often come across collections of Victorian and Edwardian photographs - generally the Carte de Visite. Many have the names of the photographers on the reverse.

Before moving these on, from now on, I'll scan any that are for Northumberland - old Northumberland - Newcastle to Berwick - and record them here.

I'll do both sides, but the objective is to record the photographer. The identity of the subject(s), is, almost always, lost to time.

Please add your own if you have any!

Great idea Mike, somebody might recognise someone!
Here's a few of mine - all from my Grandmother in Amble so must be related but only Mrs Otto (top left) identified.

Splendid Gordon. If you have the scan at high resolution I can always add the Northumberland ones to the the thread 'large size'.

Here's an odd one. the image itself embedded in the card feels like something solid - glass or metal. I thought subject was a boy but on closer inspection it must be a girl?

[edit. I think this is what you call a 'Tintype' where the photo was on a metal plate. These are allegedly magnetic, and this one is. It would also explain the rust]

Other direction now, one from Morpeth.

'Charlton Morpeth'

I thought the name on this was just a dirty smudge at first but it is in fact an ink stamp - 'Charlton Morpeth'. I assume an early card for this photographer.

Plenty in the Newspaper archives regarding Mr. John Charlton, Photographer and for many years teacher at the Bullers' Green Mission Sunday School.

Not a photograph but a magic lantern, with dealers plate John Watson 34 Grainger St Newcastle, according to Lucerna, the magic lantern resource, that dates it to mid 1890s. Currently residing in my fathers loft and has been for at least 60 years, pics attached

Nice item. I did have a box of magic lantern glass slides at one time. Landscape photos, coloured Christmas themed slides and other religious ones. Now sadly gone. All very collectable I think. Boy were they heavy when all together.

That Group photo is an odd one. Could be a post mortem photo for the youngest child. Very strange position he is in. Victorians were masters of the art of posing the dead. We will never know.

Henry Scott Gowenlock, Photographer, aged 29 and his assistant, Florence Lister, aged 26, are both lodging in Alnwick on census night 1911. They are in the premises of Fanny Thompson, widow, aged 50, at 8 Bondgate Within.

[edit- looking at the death index Gowenlock died in the same quarter as the 1911 census!]

[edit 2. He's a draper's assistant in 1901. His parents ran the Globe Inn in Alnwick at this time.]

Alan J. 13-07-2016 03:23 PM

Rather an unusual surname, my mother was "in service" in the late 1920's to a Mrs Gowenlock who had Castlegate House in Warkworth. That is the house at the top of Castle Street where you go towards the castle. She took in boarders and at the time my mother was there Major Vernon Merivale was a resident, he was involved at Hauxley Colliery which was then in it's infancy.

There are a few WW1 medal index cards for Northumberland Fusilier Gowenlocks, but none on the Absent voter lists. Possibly Alnwick or Warkworth men discharged before early 1918? Some of those lost local combatants no one knows about.

Thanks for this Mike, I couldn't find anything.

Any idea how deep the water is at the weir opposite the Stanners?
.

It is tidal there, from walkable across the old weir (knee deep) to two to three feet at a high tide. Obviously any significant rain and it can be deep, fast flowing and lethal

Gordon 20-12-2016 08:57 AM

Thanks holydog. I wonder if she was buried in the churchyard at Stanners where they lived...(hint...hint)
