Joseph Berry DFC with Two Bars
 
The Duke School Book of Remembrance has a long entry for Joseph, son of Arthur J Berry a deputy at Whittle, living at Hampeth. At school he was "small, quiet and unobtrusive"
He started in the RAFVR in the ranks and was commissioned in 1942. At 23 he was awarded the DFC (1944) for destroying three enemy aircraft in Italy. On two occasions he had to abandon his aircraft.
September 1944 he was awarded a bar to his DFC.....within a short period of time destroying numerous flying bombs as leader of a Tempest Squadron.
He ended up top scoring RAF pilot at shooting down Doodlebugs which entered the Guinness Book of Records.
2 October 1944 missing believed killed in air operations over Holland.

CWG: Squadron Leader, buried Scheemda Protestant Cemetery, Netherlands.
