Radcliffe Wedding c1930
 

Received a charming wedding photo circa 1930; location is believed to be next to the Radcliffe Arms, Radcliffe. Contains members of the King and Wood families.

Possibly more people to be identified.

Is this a King/Wood marriage do you know, Coquet?

The only GRO ref I could find was a wedding in Newcastle of a Sarah King to John Wood in 1933.

Not sure if it's a marriage between those two families - hopefully will have more info shortly.

Hi,
The photo is one from my wife's family who were one of the King family from Radcliffe. I hope to have the identity of some of those present soon.
I believe of the 3 lads on the front left, the first on the left is Tom Keen ( his father Harold and mother Elizabeth (nee King ) are on the photo but not sure where at the moment ) then the next 2 lads are two of the King brothers, I believe Frank and Raymond. Not certain which but will check. The other brother is George who is standing second from the left at the back. The photo is marked with pen indicating Mum and Dad. Mum is Harriet King ( nee Craiggs ) (1888-1980) while Dad wearing the bowler, is Jack ( John ) King (1892-1975).

I hope to have a few more clues soon.

We have had a country wide discussion as to where the venue is. It is probably not the Radcliffe Arms but exactly where it is is undecided. Now thought to be ' West End' Ashington.
As to the rest I will hope to explain.
Forgive any errors but it was over 80 years ago.
We are happy that the reason for the gathering was a double wedding in 1932 between Norman Davison and Lizzie Wood and between Joseph Robson and Mary Wood.

41 William Wood husband of 39. He may be the manager of the reception venue but believed killed at Hauxley pit just prior WW2.

43 Alice Taylor, had a son Edward who was married to No 54. Possibly ran the Railway Pub at Cramlington, late 1930s
44 & 46 are the two bridesmaids.
No 44 is Nellie Trueman whose father was manager of the Co-op store ( presumably Radcliffe).

57 Don't know his name, possibly Dickie, married 52 May Taylor, Met at the Radcliffe Co-op where they both worked.
58 Tom Keen became Blacksmith at Hauxley pit.

Not in the photo, groom Norman Davison was a sailor,. Not known whether Royal or Merchant Navy.

Excellent effort Oxonian.

Great achievement getting all those people identified, Oxonian. I recall back in the 1960s my dad used to take me and some friends to all the home games at St James' Park. We had a particular spot in the far corner of the Leazes End which we would always try and get to. That proved impossible at a derby game and we were squeezed in at the corner of the Leazes and the stand. We had Frank King with us.
In those days footballers were normal people.

Thanks. We have my mother in law to thank. Born in Radcliffe in 1921 and still has strong memories of the place. I knew Frank King when he lived in Luton. A gentleman with a great sense of humour.
