1910 Miners' Strike

An interesting report in the Sunderland Daily Echo of 2 February 1910 regarding Radcliffe:

"NORTHUMBERLAND COLLIERIES STORMED

At Radcliffe, Northumberland, on Saturday and Sunday nights the coal trucks were stormed and a large quantity of coal and coke taken. Amongst the raiders were women with masks.
At 1 o'clock on Monday a pistol shot was fired, and between two and three hundred men, women and lads, with every description of receptacle, rushed the coal heaps and waggons at the colliery. The coal was to be used for colliery consumption. At five o'clock a contingent of fourteen policemen arrived on the scene.
At Amble yesterday (Tuesday) ten waggons of coal were rushed, and a considerable amount of this was carried away."

Well, you've got to keep the home fires burning :)
