Bullock's Hall, another lost village

Bullock's Hall. another totally obliterated old mining village. This land has now been opencast by the Maiden's Hall site.

Map below shows the colliery in red, the dotted line heading off to the west is possibly an Aerial rope-way, similar we assume to what Longframlington Colliery had, or perhaps an endless rope haulage like Longdyke Colliery (old Shilbottle colliery).

Green is the site of Chevington Chapelry building

Yellow is Bullock's Hall itself.

Note the corresponding row of "netties" behind the Chevington Crescent houses.

Coquet 15-12-2011 06:11 PM

Anyone know what happened to the graves at the Chapel? what's the procedure when a graveyard is opencast??

rickt 15-12-2011 07:14 PM

The building on the left of the map .............I wonder if that's Ainsley's farm ? .
My relatives lived just opposite the farm ,infact by the map above their house must have been built on the burial site.
My late grandparents lived on the Crescent ,infact I have a vey old picture of them as youngsters outside one of the houses.

Could be Rick, I am not familiar with the area unfortunately. The yellow building on this 1920s map, is just marked "Bullock's Hall", possibly later known as the farm you mention?

I am under the impression that most of the buildings shown were long gone before the opencast administered the coup de grĂ¢ce to anything that was left. [from googling the opencast started in 1996]

I'm sure the Chapel had an archaeological investigation done shortly before the opencast got started. [If I can find a link for this info I will add it]

edit to add link: http://www.biab.ac.uk/issues/64678 "Chevington Chapel Site Investigation [Site name: CHEVINGTON CHAPEL SITE [WEST CHEVINGTON]" just a summary at that link.

Had a look on the 1911 census to see if it was possible to find a list of who was living in Chevington Crescent by address. Not that easy.

The Enumerators Book lists the following places:

Parish of West Chevington (Entire); Chevington Colliery, including Crescent, High Wood Row, Wood Row, Maiden’s Hall, Chevington Cottages, Amble Junction, Chevington Woods, Chevington Farm & Cottages, Station, Chevington Moor, Farm and Cottages, Infectious Disease Hospital.

Bullock’s Hall (Entire); Bullock's Hall, Farm and Cottages.

Yet searching the database produces only one hit for purely "Chevington Crescent". I can see that there are 50 houses in that row, so something's up.

rickt 18-12-2011 11:10 PM

Yes , the houses and chapel were demolished years before the opencast had started .
My grandfather would take me as a youngster to visit his sister who lived in a house opposite Ainsley's farm, this was in the sixty's and the Crescent had gone long before that .A caravan park was at the rear of the house's in the map above .

Coquet 26-12-2011 10:52 AM

1897 map.

The 1911 Census shows 26 condemned dwellings, and two occupied dwellings in Wood Row which must be the row here in yellow. These are all gone from the 1920s map above. Chevington Crescent appears to have also been known as "Brick Row" and I've found a corresponding number of entries on the census for those houses. Another row of eight houses called East Parade is recorded on the 1911 census and is shown in green on this map, they too have been demolished before the 1920's map.

Heres the old photo I have of of Chevington Crescent taken in 1912 . My late grandfather is there in the front row of youngsters .Life was tough in those days and you had to be tough to survive . My grandfather was in the Territorial Army ,captured at the begining of the war and spent 5 years of his life in Stalag9C POW camp .Came back to resume his working life in the pits .

That's a gem. The "Minimum" refers to the grievance behind the 1912 Miners' Strike, which also became the catch phrase of the miners; "Minimum or Nowt" - they were striking for a minimum wage for miners.

interesting , Coquet .I often wondered what that meant ,I thought the supporters text had something to do with the local football team ............silly me .

Here's a snapshot of the 1911 inhabitants, places in brackets are birthplaces:

High/Wood Row, only two families indexed, rest of the properties (26) condemned "bad sewerage" I assume these last two were waiting to be moved.
This row has been demolished by the time of the 1920s map. (26+2 = 28, agreeing with the number of dwellings on the map)

Chevington Colliery

I've just been having a look at the exchange of messages about Bullocks Hall and Chevington Colliery. What is interesting from the census material is where the people came from.

A few years ago I did some family history for my brother in law, mainly because he kept raising the issue of why my surname (and his wife's) was a middle name for an uncle. But that's another story. His father's family is on the census data from Chevington Colliery. They originated from Norfolk where they were agricultural labourers. The great grandparents married in Norfolk in 1870 and by 1871 were in Jarrow, then Throckley (coal mining) and finally Chevington. All the children were born in Northumberland.

I seem to recall Jeremy Paxman on Who Do You Think You Are tracing his ancestors from Norfolk. There was a mass exodus from the land to the new industrial areas of the north. Obviously everyone was hoping and dreaming of a better life:(

Since then, the family was obviously forced out of Chevington Colliery and then Chevington Drift. Hadston's still standing!

5) James again, at his front door in C.Cresc., presumably no.13. I recall he had a greenhouse & allotment on the opposite side of the road just to the east of the row, near the stream.

6)James & Sarah outside 126 Woodside Crescent, Hadston, their home after being moved from Chevington. Sarah died in 1954 & James moved to St.Albans to live with us not long after.

Regarding the footpath to Red Row mentioned in the "Chevington Crescent" thread, as a schoolgirl, mother used to walk to the main road every day to catch the bus for the Duchess School in Alnwick, so this may be the route she used.

I imagine many families were moved to Hadston at the same time - certainly the Griffiths name rings a bell.

A coincidence - George was born in Norfolk but moved to Northumberland in the mid 1800's ; During WW2 in Northumberland, my mother met & married my father who was also born in Norfolk.

I hope this stuff will be of interest to someone!

Interesting that your George seems to have been on the move from Norfolk to Northumberland at about the same time as my brother in law's Chevington family. George is in Chester le Street in 1871 and then Northumberland by 1881, mine were in Jarrow in 1871 and then Northumberland by 1881 and Chevington Collliery by 1891.

Hi I`m a newcomer to your group. I`m in the process of doing my family tree but seem to be hitting a brick wall on my Mothers side. I knew my Grandma Sarah Jane Johnson maiden name Brown lived in Bullocks Hall and noticed she`s on the 1911 census you have on the site as living at 28 Chevington Crescent. I knew my grandmother and grandfather were buried in Chevington Cemetary but I`ve now found My great grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth Jane Brown were in your burial transcripts. Maybe she could be one of those little children seen in the picture in Chevington Crescent. Thank you so much for that
