Widdrington Castle

Hard to believe that nothing visible remains of this today. This print is from an engraving by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck made in 1728, as far as i know the only image we have of Widdrington Castle and how it dominated the scenery for miles around.

The contents of the Newton Hall estate were auctioned off recently which included a lot of Cook and Widdrington possessions.
The first sale of the higher quality items went via Christies.

here's a portrait of the Shilbottle vicar Joseph Cook

entry page for the whole sale is here

I did ask Christies if I could use their images of Rev Cook and his brother on our website but they have ignored me.

The lower value items from the estate were sold via Jim Railton's Alnwick auction house.

page 1 of that lot is here

they had a nice picture of Dorothy Widdrington which went for £260. this then appeared on ebay and went for £1,120 - nice little earner for someone.

Anyway back on topic, in the Railton sale he had a Wilson Hepple oil of Widdrington Castle, which is the only other image I have seen, but perhaps Hepple used the older engraving as the inspiration for his oil anyway?

this is it here (went for £850)

Was it in the field behind (east) of the Parish Church?

I did start photographing and transcribing the old stones in the churchyard but only got half done before my camera filled up.

did get the page started:

Yes, thats it Mike, just a mound of soil remaining. For some reason i can't post alink but the Keys To The Past site is very useful.
Good work on your Fusilier page, thats going to be a very handy resource for family history.

I've never come across that painting before, (i had to google Wilson Hepple)
I think he was born too late to paint the castle while it was standing, so perhaps he painted it from the engraving.
It's a shame the auction house never replied re permission to use the portrait, it would have been an excellent addition, clergy being an important part of family life, and interesting for anyone researching their family tree seeing a picture of the bloke who baptised/married/ buried their forebears.
Never mind, copyright is a funny thing, you do right to be wary.
