I haven't taken a look yet as Friday is always one of the site's more hectic days, but it sounds promising.

Well, not quite as good as I thought, the data is incomplete :(

The AV lists only cover Newcastle districts currently. Still, patience is a virtue.

It will be good when it's finished.

Some of the 1918 AV lists for the North East no longer exist. Or I should say that is the case regarding Woodhorn, if I've been informed correctly. Tynemouth is missing at Woodhorn, one that I desperately wanted to see. Some of the Wansbeck/Morpeth areas too.

I would be ecstatic if a full set of lists resided elsewhere.

That 1939 register can't be far off now Janwhin? 2015 they said. I'm sitting here tapping my watch.

For Northumberland they only have four, which are in Newcastle- and they are not the important spring 1918 lists.

I've signed up for their advance notice thingy for this. Bet it comes out on Christmas Day or something :rolleyes:

I noticed the link to the 1939 records, or what will I assume become the entry page for them, has now appeared on the website's top menu - must be close to going live.

Stop tapping....1939 register online from next Monday. It looks like they'll be charging.

Sneaky buggers. I bet quite a few have renewed annual subscriptions through this year in expectation of getting at the 1939 records. Still be charging their subscribers an additional charge!

Just been onto the 1939 search and, to be honest, the 'preview' given is a bit vague to be sure that you have found the right people, plus some records are 'closed' - I'll not be gambling £5 per household to find out there's no connection... :(

yes too expensive. I suspect in a few years it will be free as part of the subscription. I'll just wait. :)

Yes Janwhin, I agree. It is a lot of money to pay for a 'possible' match. The clauses regarding exemptions are a bit confusing too. Ah well! Back to the drawing board.:)

I've done a very naughty thing and paid for 5 households on the Register because there was some mystery about a marriage of my granddad's brother. Now here's the daft bit, he was living in Hartside at the Drift and the image gives me everybody on the page, that is those living at numbers 30 to 19. So if anyone thinks they might have someone there.....well, let me know :D

Hi - Im new to these sites and have just joined findmypast after seeing it mentioned here, but am wondering if it is the best one to join as there seem to be more records/matches on other sites. Is it possible to transfer data if I decide another site is better as it seems to be saved in a special format?
Bit late now as I have spent all week updating and transferring out trees.

Unless you keep the subscription up year after year you will lose access anyway so it is best to keep your trees and data on your computer as a first choice. I'm sure there will be some free software somewhere for the construction of trees/pedigrees. Regarding transferring records between sites, I've not heard of it, it would be nice in the spirit of competition but I'm not hopeful of such a feature appearing.

Something else regarding the genealogy websites, Janwhin has noticed this and me too- if you construct trees and they are public, others pick up on your data and misinterpret it - I've had photos taken of ancestors from my trees and linked to the wrong people it other members trees. Most irritating!

As to which is the best site - there are only two worth paying for in my opinion - findmypast.co.uk and ancestry.co.uk. They have the same core data, so it is the extras that is the decider.

I need access to both sites. I couldn't give up either. :)

Which site gets the parish records up the quickest would probably be the better one for just building trees, as that is where the current need is - that is pushing your tree back before the census and bmds. (pre 1830s). How they are each doing on that score I wouldn't like to say.

I have downloaded as far as I have gone so far - does that qualify for keeping my tree on the computer?
It does seem to be in a strange format - GED file?
If I let my subscription lapse will the data still be available in a few years time when I decide to have another look?

I think the tree remains, you regain access when you resubscribe.

That's good news.

Another thing, how do you share you're tree with others? There is a option of private of public tree - I chose public but this disables living relatives.

Those GED files need to be opened in a genealogy program to view on your computer.
