Looking at the casualty lists Thomas McKenzie went in the bag PoW at Dunkirk. 7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Reappears in late 1943 as no longer PoW. I think there was some repatriations/exchanges of PoW at this time.

Just to confuse matters there are two T. McKenzie's in the 7th captured at Dunkirk, but the chap above (4267633) is a Sergeant, the other (3178693) is a 'Fusilier' AKA a Private.

This appears to be his Great War DCM citation:

Stuff of movies. He's in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Thank you Coquet, Yes there was a T Mackenzie repatriated in November 1943 presumed wounded. There is also a resemblance to him in a photo previously posted on here, Tuck Mackenzie down Broomhill Colliery. I think D. Mackenzie is my Uncle Dan, from Hadston. I can see the strong resemblance in the pit photo. Possibly the same man?

Referring to the RNF WW2 History, the 7th ended up quite a bit west of Dunkirk with their division (51st highland) expecting to escape at Le Harve (when it was finally obvious the game was up)...but... news eventually came there were no ships, and never likely to be any. They destroyed all their equipment on the 11th of June surrendered at St Valery on the 12th June.

A new 7th Battalion formed in England sometime later and carried on the fight.
