Mystery Bridge
 

There is a bridge there - honest. An old arched road bridge within 4 miles of Amble, next to a main road. Anyone recognise the location?

I think it's a bridge over the Hazon burn. Not too distant from its junction with the Coquet??

Close ish but not right. Want a clue? it is not used anymore, the road bypasses about 15 metres from it, therefore its not on any maps. The location is within about 2 miles from your guess!

No, wrong direction. It is on a bus route, under 2 miles from Warkworth station (your first guess?), if you sit on the left side of the bus going to Alnwick you can see it, not obvious now because of the foliage, but an old stone arched road bridge is certainly there.

I'm more confused now! is it on the shilbottle Tyelaw Burn ?

It is on the Warkworth to Shilbottle road next to where it crosses the burn at the Low Buston junction. The burn being the one that comes off the old pit heap ( Tylaw burn?) and runs alongside the road often flooding it. It is well hidden under the foliage, I presume it was unsuitable for the pit buses and large traffic as it looks to be single carriageway.

I know the place, I'll see if I can spot it next trip to Shilbottle - Probably some nice stonework under that lot of vegetation!

Here's the lost Shilbottle bridge today. It must be listed surely?

That overgrowth is probably slowly demolishing it, and there's a tree fallen over it that must be a metre thick.

Shall we discreetly find out whose responsibility it is?
I would like to know its history - any idea how old?
I bet someone at NCC is quietly hoping it is forgotten about but what would happen if it became dangerous, not to mention blocking the stream and flooding the road etc.?

It's real; there's a long sandstone lintel cutting across that angle and supporting the upper stonework.

Not sure how old; and the local authority as you say is most likely responsible as I guess it remained part of the highways stock?
Not sure if they would want to hear about it though - I think they're in "neglect if possible" mode at the moment to save money. I see the Hallbank well area in Amble (for example) was being maintained for a number of years; it's back to jungle now!
