Default 1820: Causes of death

I mentioned in the Radcliffe timeline thread that there might be in the Warkworth burial register a reference to the 1864 Radcliffe epidemic that killed 20. Something to look into on a future visit to Woodhorn.

I did some time ago transcribe 1820 from that register. Thought I would add it here as it shows cause of death for some of that year. Somewhat unusual, wish they did that for all the entries.

William Tate of Hadston, formerly a shoe maker, died Jan 13, buried Jan 16, aged 82, old age.

John Dawson of Acklington, a butcher, died Jan 23, buried Jan 26, aged 70, old age.

Jane Southern of Acklington, a widow, died Jan 24, buried Jan 27, aged 70, old age.

Isabella Hudson of Amble, a spinster, died Jan 28, buried Jan 31, aged 31, killed by a stroke from a horse.

Ann Dawson of Acklington, a spinster, died Jan 31, buried Feb 3, aged 63, lingering disease, extreme poverty.

Edward Edgar of Hadston, Husbandman, son of [????] Edgar, died Feb 7, buried Feb 10, aged 20, Rheumatic Pains.

Sarah Beal of High Buston, widow, died Feb 11, buried Feb 13, aged 79 years, old age.

Jane Wilson of Warkworth, a widow, died March 5, buried March 7, aged 75 years, a cancer.

Thomas Robson of Amble, son of Thomas Robson, a Husbandman, died March 26 buried March 27, age 2 years, water in the head.

Henry Paterson of Acklington, weaver, died March 29, buried April 1, aged 76, [???] of the intestines.

Eleanor Barker of Warkworth, daughter of the late William Barker, died March 29, buried April 1, aged 21, a complaint on her head.

Nicholas Wood of Togston, Husbandman, died April 2, buried April 4, aged 74, Rheumatic pains.

John Wake of Guyzance East House, husbandman, died April 12, buried April 16, aged 76, old age.

Elizabeth Davison of Warkworth, daughter of Andrew Davison, a pedlar, died May 26, buried May 27, [age?], an inflammation of the bowel.

Charles Maxwell, of Togston, a gardener, the family of Togston 45 years, died June 9, buried June 12, aged 79, an inflammation of the leg.

Elizabeth Meredith of Warkworth, wife of Joseph Meredith, Officer of Excise, died June 15, buried June 18, aged 26, consumption.

Elizabeth Armstrong of Hauxley, Daughter of James Armstrong, a fisherman, died July 25, buried July 27, aged 2 ¾ years, consumption.

Joseph Forster Meredith of Warkworth, Son of Joseph Meredith, Officer of Excise, ……….

James White of Amble, a salmon fisherman, native of Ireland, died Aug 21 buried Aug 23, aged 49 years, his death caused by the shafts of a cart.

Margaret Thompson of Ulgham, wife of Charles Thompson, [?????], died Sep 3, buried Sep 5, aged 32, child birth.


[the entries now switch to a short version without the cause of death. Added here to complete the burials for the 1820 year]

Two accidental deaths for Amble folk in there:

Not sure what is meant by a 'stroke'? crushed or kicked perhaps.
