There is a reference in he County History to a survey of 1567 which mentions the freestone quarries of Newtown and Birling which produced grindstones and were a major "export" along with fish at the time.
There is a later reference to the Birling freestone quarry, along which the main road north of the river now goes, which produced the stone for the castle and eventually grindstones.
