The breakwater does not appear on OS maps until the second series 1898, so it is unlikely this is the South Pier referred to. Going back to the post card, is the wooden structure to the seaward side...

Generally it was 6" or over that was worked. However West Chevington had a washing plant, so anything below 6" was put through that. I'm wondering whether Hauxley pumps may have had an influence on...
