Melrose the Butcher

1 Attachment(s)
The Melrose family originally came from Felton where they ran the Widdrington Arms Inn (now the Running Fox bakery and cafe). A son, William Edward, set up a butcher's shop in Queen Street, Amble and he and his son after him ran it for many years in the 1800s. The Melrose family also married into the Lyall family in Amble.

The attached photograph is of a clock that must have been in the shop but in 1971 was still in Amble (when this photo was taken). Does anyone know anything about it?

That's a good one, Coquet. They are certainly listed as living on High Street in the burial registers for the East Cemetery.

Melrose Butcher

The Queens Head Inn was bought by the Melrose family and his butchers shop is what is now 23 High Street. This later became a doctors surgery. The street numbers are confusing as what is now 23 was 25 which is why the house next door occupied by McAndrews is 27 before he moved to 17 Bede Street.
